A public channel is visible to every member of its space. A private channel is visible only to the people added to it, and it does not appear in the sidebar or in search results for anyone else.
Making an existing public channel private removes it from the view of everyone who is not explicitly a member. Add the people who should keep access before you flip it, not after.
