Two-step sign-in

Turn it on in Preferences › Account by scanning a code with any authenticator app. From then on a correct password alone does not sign you in: the app’s six digits do, and each code works once.

Recovery codes are shown once, for when the phone is not to hand, and each can be used once. Turning two-step off asks for a current code and clears the recovery codes.
